Born as François-Marie Arouet on the 21st of November 1694 in Paris, he became one of the leading writers of the Enlightenment era, with great works such as the satirical novella Candide and the tragic play Zaïre. Famous for his wit and satire, Voltaire wrote over 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and pamphlets in his 82 years.
